Catherine C. Sherman

quiltmaker/conceptual artist/teaching artist

Catherine C. Sherman, a passionate quilting artist based in San Francisco, possesses a unique talent for weaving the threads of history into intricate tapestries. Her creative process is a beautiful dance of “Collect/Assemble/Repeat,” as she artfully gathers upcycled materials to unveil captivating stories of the past to inspire generations to come.

With a deep reverence for the human experience, Catherine shares, “I collect and work with these elements of our very human story to explore new narratives while bearing witness to the past.” Her work transcends mere fabric and stitches, delving into the shared geometries of our existence, where individual expressions converge.

Catherine’s artistic journey is enriched by her connections within the creative community. She’s an active member of Art Associations and galleries such as the Purple Maroon Collective, ArtSpan, and Hunt & Gather collaborating with like-minded individuals who appreciate the profound beauty of storytelling through quilts. She frequently partners with museums and organizations to bring her art to a broader audience, and her Pop Ups with Friends and family create warm, inviting spaces for her quilts to shine.

Among Catherine’s favorite sources for her materials is SCRAP SF, a treasure trove for the creatively inclined. She breathes new life into discarded remnants with each attachment and stitch, allowing their histories to resurface in a dazzling tapestry of colors and patterns.

Catherine C. Sherman’s quilts are more than just fabric; they are a testament to the power of creativity to connect us with our roots while pointing the way to a vibrant, shared future. Her work is a testament to the beauty of reimagining the past and creating art transcending time.

Welcome to the movement!

“Catherine Sherman’s quilts are more than fabric stitched together—they are stories, symbols of empathy, and expressions of unity . . . her work blends craftsmanship with intention, creating pieces meant to be cherished by collectors and passed down through generations.”
